Anthony (AJ) Denton II

5th Dan: Guem Yong Do (the Golden Dragon Way) Hapkido

AKA: Instructor Denton / (Ajacks)

At an early age Anthony J. Denton, II, showed an interest in the arts, illustrating small Looney/Disney type characters. He would often set up his toys in a movie-set style fashion, acting out the television shows and movies he watched. His parents encouraged his art and creativity, and to this day he continues to create original characters, some of which have been used for small businesses, school year books, comedy clubs, album covers and merchandising.

He excelled in video production and art classes where he directed, filmed, edited videos and even created his own animated short film. He has worked with television crews and helped direct small commercials for local businesses in Minot, North Dakota. But this is not the limit of Anthony’s talents.

Continuing in his passion for the arts and film, Anthony was naturally drawn into world of martial arts. From a young age Anthony longed for the opportunity to learn and train such a delicate art form. Anthony got his chance to experience this dream while playing Pop Warner Football between the ages of 8 and 9 years old. Anthony was given the opportunity to learn and train in a free class for a month, and since then the passion only grew. Unfortunately for Anthony, his family could not afford to continue the training lessons.

Growing up on the streets of Rialto, California was not an easy feat. Anthony resorted to the lessons of street fighting and surviving on instinct. That was until his mother was able to publish a book and the family left the hectic life of California, and moved to Mohall, North Dakota in ’95.

It was a few years later, in ’97, that Anthony was presented with another opportunity to train. Starting with Golden Dragon at the age of 19 under the order of Master Timothy E. Engelbrecht, president and founder of the American Traditional Hapkido Association. Within just another two years, Anthony received his 1st degree black belt in Hapkido, Taekwondo, and Kung Fu. Anthony went on to compete in Karate/Taekwondo tournaments and fought in one of the first full contact MMA fights in Winnipeg, Canada in 2001.

As a 1st degree black belt, Anthony took up the mantle of teaching others in 2000. Teaching all that were willing and wanting to learn, from children to elderly. Anthony has even assisted in the training of police and military forces and personnel. He has even choreographed demonstrations for boxing matches, half time sports shows, public school shows, and community outreach programs. Even helping to incorporate those who are handicapped into training.

Originally, Anthony was teaching at a location on Minot Air Force Base, but after the events of 9/11, security practices made it increasingly more difficult to gain access to the base. Anthony moved his teachings back into Minot.

One of the greatest traits that Anthony has carried with him in his transition from student to teacher, his devotion to the encouragement of spreading knowledge and not the focus of financial gain. Just as his Master before him, he charges a rate that shallows greatly compared to the caliber of instruction that students receive. This allows those, who just like Anthony in his younger years, who come from a low-income family to have the ability to follow their passion to learn.

Anthony continued his training over the years and currently holds 1st Degree Black Belt in Kukiwon Taekwondo, 4th Dan TKD Golden Dragon, a 5th Degree Black Belt Hapkido, a Red Sash Hwang-Guem Yong Do, and studied some Boxing/Kickboxing, Japanese Kabudo Weapons, also dabbled in Jujitsu, MMA, KunTao, Silat and Kali/ Escrima.

It is with this determination and driven passion that Anthony instructs his classes, to instill the five tenants of Taekwondo and to empower children and adults alike with confidence and knowledge.
